چکیده

The most important problems of today are meeting the increasing energy needs and avoiding environmental pollution caused by fossil resources usage for production. In addition, decrease in usable water world has become a threat to human health population. Microbial fuel cells (MFC) have more interesting recent years because their potential solve these three problems. Organic inorganic contents wastewater can be seen as sources. MFCs only systems that convert chemical organic content into electricity. While this transformation is realized, process cleaning done. Reducing costs parameter accelerate use system. particular, studies on reducing cost efficiency catalysts used cathode compartment where oxygen reduction reaction takes place predominant. study, materials will examined alternative discussed.

Anode materials for sediment microbial fuel cells.

INTRODUCTION Plant microbial fuel cells (P-MFCs), and more general sediment microbial fuel cells, make use of electricigenic metabolism of microorganisms in anoxic soils and sediments. Electricigenic microorganisms are able to respire organic carbon from the soil or sediment with an electrode as final electron acceptor [1]. In this work, the focus is on the anode buried in the sediment, the ele...

Neutral hydrophilic cathode catalyst binders for microbial fuel cells†

Improving oxygen reduction in microbial fuel cell (MFC) cathodes requires a better understanding of the effects of the catalyst binder chemistry and properties on performance. A series of polystyrene-bpoly(ethylene oxide) (PS-b-PEO) polymers with systematically varying hydrophilicity were designed to determine the effect of the hydrophilic character of the binder on cathode performance. Increas...

Mesoporous nitrogen-rich carbon materials as cathode catalysts in microbial fuel cells

The high cost of the catalyst material used for the oxygen reduction reaction in microbial fuel cell (MFC) cathodes is one of the factors limiting practical applications of this technology. Mesoporous nitrogen-rich carbon (MNC), prepared at different temperatures, was examined as an oxygen reduction catalyst, and compared in performance to Pt in MFCs and electrochemical cells. MNC calcined at 8...

Air-cathode structure optimization in separator-coupled microbial fuel cells.

Microbial fuel cells (MFC) with 30% wet-proofed air cathodes have previously been optimized to have 4 diffusion layers (DLs) in order to limit oxygen transfer into the anode chamber and optimize performance. Newer MFC designs that allow close electrode spacing have a separator that can also reduce oxygen transfer into the anode chamber, and there are many types of carbon wet-proofed materials a...

COD removal characteristics in air-cathode microbial fuel cells.

Exoelectrogenic microorganisms in microbial fuel cells (MFCs) compete with other microorganisms for substrate. In order to understand how this affects removal rates, current generation, and coulombic efficiencies (CEs), substrate removal rates were compared in MFCs fed a single, readily biodegradable compound (acetate) or domestic wastewater (WW). Removal rates based on initial test conditions ...
